GIVE and FAST: Keep the Relationship and Yourself
Getting exactly what you asked for and torching the relationship in the process is not a win. And neither is keeping the peace by abandoning yourself. DEAR MAN gets you the objective. GIVE protects the relationship while you do it. FAST protects your self-respect. You run them alongside the ask, not instead of it.

Hook
Getting exactly what you asked for and torching the relationship in the process is not a win. And neither is keeping the peace by abandoning yourself. DEAR MAN gets you the objective. GIVE protects the relationship while you do it. FAST protects your self-respect. You run them alongside the ask, not instead of it.
GIVE
GIVE is for when the relationship matters. G — Gentle. No attacks, no threats, no contempt. E— no, let me do it right: G — Gentle, I — Interested, actually listen to their side, V — Validate, show them you genuinely get where they're coming from, E — Easy manner, a little lightness, a little warmth, because people defend against pressure and open up to ease. GIVE is how you ask a hard thing and still be welcome at the table tomorrow.
FAST
FAST is for when your self-respect is on the line. F — Fair, to them and to yourself, you're not a doormat and you're not a bully. A — no Apologies, and I mean stop apologizing for existing, for asking, for taking up space; over-apologizing tells everyone including you that your ask isn't legitimate. S — Stick to your values; don't sell out what matters to you just to be liked. T — Truthful; no exaggerating, no fake helplessness, no manipulation. FAST is how you walk away from the conversation still respecting yourself.
Balance by priority
Now remember the triad from lesson one. You lead with DEAR MAN when the objective is what matters. You lean harder on GIVE when the relationship is the priority — soften it, slow it, validate more. You hold FAST when your self-respect is what's at stake — firmer, fewer apologies, values forward. Usually you're blending all three at once, but the priority you picked tells you which to weight.
The self-respect trap
And let me name the trap I see most, because most people I work with have the same one: they over-give and under-FAST. They keep everyone around them happy, they apologize constantly, they bend their own values to avoid friction — and they quietly resent every minute of it. If that's you — if you read GIVE and thought 'I already do all of that' and read FAST and felt uncomfortable — then FAST is your growth edge. That discomfort is the lesson. Lean into the part that's hard for you.
The rep
Your rep: take the DEAR MAN script you wrote last lesson, and add one GIVE move and one FAST move to it. One thing that protects the relationship — maybe a validation, maybe an easy opener. And one thing that protects your self-respect — maybe cutting an unnecessary apology you'd put in, maybe holding a line you were about to soften. Now your script protects all three objectives at once. Next lesson — what to do when the conversation is already hot: de-escalation.
